@Chris - I love the essential oil in the Neti idea. I've also read that some people are putting <a href="http://www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/2010/12/heal-sinus-infections-with-no-antibiotics-really/" rel="nofollow">probiotics in their Neti</a>, but I have not tried it.

Since I wrote this post 2 years ago, I have altered some of <a href="http://criticalmas.com/2011/01/how-i-fought-off-a-potential-cold/" rel="nofollow">my suggestions</a>. I'm also a fan of Vitamin D3 for immune support.

Oh ya, and breathing exclusively through your nose, and never through your mouth, may help avoid colds. Allegedly, our nose is better equipped to trap airborn microbial offenders, than your mouth.

At first sign of symptoms, I dramatically increase my Vitamin C intake (1000 mg+), use a netti pot to do a sinus rinse with salt, and put a drop or two of essential oil at the base of my nose (eucalyptus oil, anti-viral and bacterial sinus blends).

This combination has helped me avoid two or three colds already in the last few months, where it felt like normally, without these interventions, the cold already had me in its grips. That is not exactly scientific, but it has worked so far for me.

Sometimes I take "Emergen-C" to increase my vitamin C intake, and that seems to help. I used to take Airbornne, and that seemed to help, but not as much, and primarily seemed to limit the duration of the cold, but not prevent it as much. I prefer to just dramatically increase my intake of citrus fruit when I feel vulnerable, but when I am too lazy to do that, or don't feel like eating five oranges, I take a supplement like mentioned above.

Sleep seems to help.

There definitely is a positive correlation with gym attendance, and incidence of my getting or almost getting a cold. I believe whole-heartedly in not touching my face, then washing my hands like a surgeon when getting home from the gym. The no face touching while at the gym, was harder for me than it sounds, once you start really paying attention.

There also is an ridiculously high incidence of my getting a cold or almost getting a cold, with taking an inhaled corticosteroid, for asthma. So I avoid my Symbicort at all costs, unless I am pretty desperate (i.e. near death). :-)

Air circulation. Never close your house up entirely. Always leave a window cracked somewhere to allow fresh air in. Make sur eto change filters on your HVAC system regularly. The cheap filters only last a month the expensive one's go for three.

I'll probably be considered a little OCD, but I never touch the door handle when leaving a public restroom; I wash my hands and use the paper towel to open the door.

Also, I get a flu shot each year.

The hand-washing and face-touching are huge tips and I couldn't agree more. You only have to look at some of the recent studies showing sickness and infection rates in hospitals are directly related to how diligent the staff are about washing their hands.

I like to play poker and watch it on TV. It always makes me cringe how much those players touch their faces/mouths while at the same time stacking the communal chips, eating, etc. It would be interesting to know how much regular poker-room players get sick.

I think it's worth noting that a base of onions and garlic (and parsley) is called a Sofrito in Italian cooking and is a classic base for many tasty dishes. And not just in Italian cooking, either. I started with onions and garlic in the turkey chili I made last night (and do for my beef chili as well).

VERY Timely. I got sick again this week, and was about to email about the whole Turkey and Peppers thing. :-)

I wash my hands religiously, but Still touch my face too much.

Thanks!
